Lisa Olivia Munn was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her mother, Kimberly Schmid, lived in Vietnam as well, and she has Chinese origin, and her father, Winston Barrett Munn, comes from a family that has deep roots within The American South. The couple divorced when Olivia was just two years old and she was raised by her stepfather and mother, who was a part of the United States Air Force. Olivia was primarily raised in Tokyo within Japan. Although her family was relocated from Oklahoma to various other locations, it was the city of Tokyo which she completed the majority of her education. In Japan, she acted as an actor in local shows and eventually turned into a Japanese modeling model. After the family returned home to United States, Olivia moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She started her acting career by playing a minor character.
